The two mainstreams combined to form a third stream. Bandleader Paul Whiteman, whose motto was to "make a lady out of jazz," popularized what was to be labeled "symphonic jazz" during the 1920s and '30s. Duke Ellington began creating his extended works including "Reminiscing in Tempo," in 1935, and "Diminuendo in Blue and Crescendo in Blue," in 1937.
